Introduction

Every LGBTQIA person contemplates at one point in their life whether or not to tell someone about their identity. The first time they do this, it may be difficult, but as time goes on, it generally becomes easier.

It’s important to know that you never have to reveal your identity to anyone. That information is up to you to disclose. Never feel pressured to talk about anything that you don’t want to.

It is important to only come out when you feel ready to. As with any decision in life, there are pros and cons that one should weigh. How will your family react? Your friends? Do the pros outweigh the cons, or vice-versa?

This article highlights some of the major risks and benefits that go along with coming out: acceptance, potential harm, psychological well-being, etc.
