Transgender/Genderqueer

Transgender refers to people whose gender identity does not match the sex they were assigned to at birth. Gender identity is a person’s internal sense of being a man or a woman, or another identity outside of the gender binary. People in the transgender community may also refer to themselves as transgender, transsexual, or genderqueer.

Many transgender individuals try to change their bodies to align with their gender identity. This can be done using hormone therapy or surgery.

Transgender is not a sexual orientation. People who are transgender have a sexual orientation, but transgender refers to their gender identity rather than who they are attracted to. Transgender people can be straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, asexual, or any other sexuality.

Transgender people may go by a name that is not their birth name. Always refer to a transgender person as their preferred name and pronouns.
